I am Vylma V — a former criminal defense and civil rights attorney with over 20 years of social justice advocacy. The Woman Behind the V

Vylma Ortiz — known as Vylma V — is a Berkeley-based attorney, meditation teacher, radio host, Bomba/Plena drummer, runner, and the creator of the V-Method for Empowering Women. With over 20 years of experience as a social justice advocate, she has spent her life at the intersection of law, community, and transformation.

She is a member of KPFA's Women's Magazine Collective, where she produces and hosts Women's Magazine on the first Monday of every month at 1pm on 94.1 KPFA Radio. She is a graduate of KPFA's First Voice Apprenticeship Program.

Vylma V is also a drummer and dancer in the Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba/Plena folklore tradition, an active runner (Bay to Breakers and multiple Bay Area 10ks), a certified meditation teacher, and a yoga enthusiast. She is fluent in Spanish and offers the V-Method bilingually.

She is married to her partner Cesar Barragan and is raising two young men in Berkeley, CA.

On Being a Crone

The Crone years are not the end of a woman's story — they are the beginning of her most powerful chapter. Vylma V is living proof. Following the pagan women's development model of maiden, mother, and crone, she believes that wisdom, fire, and full self-possession arrive in the Crone years — and she has built her entire practice around helping women claim them.
